there is some breaking news tonight from the republican convention here in cleveland. ma.lan ya trump's speech causing a lot of controversy. this is a special cnn tonight. i'm don lemon. thank you so muc for joining us and staying up so late. on the night donald trump makes his dramatic entrance, melania trump makes a speech, a lot like one made by michelle obama eight years ago.
10:01 pm
let's get straight to my panel. that's a long walk, andy. are you out of breath? >> yes. >> let's talk about this controversy about melania trump's speech and comparisons to that of michelle oh bbama ba in 2008. i want you to listen to side by side comparisons of the two speeches. >> barack and i were raised with so many of the same values, like you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond, that you do what you say you're going to do. >> my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. >> that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them and even if you don't agree with them. >> that you treat people with respect. they taught ask showed me values

and morals in their daily life. that is a lesson that i continue to pass along to our son. and we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. >> barack and i set out to build lives by these values and to pass them on to the next generation because we want our children and all children in this nation to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them. >> because -- because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.
10:03 pm
>> caylee, what's your reaction? >> well, first of all, it looks as if someone who helps her with this speech used a portion of michelle obama's speech. that's not good. that's inexcusable. and i can understand why democrats want to make this the headline of the night because tonight what a phenomenal night for donald trump, not only that we saw someone who is an immigrant to this country who achieved the american dream who came from slovenia as a poor girl and made it here. that was what we saw tonight. she had grace, she had strength. something happened with the speech writer. everyone who writes a speech has a speech write r, with the exception of donald trump. i can understand why democrats want to make this the tonight was a phenomenal night for donald trump. >> do you think the speech writer set her up? andy, you're making an odd face over there. what? >> i mean, they're kind of close, but i mean, look, i'll tell you this, malan ya trump is
10:04 pm
an amazing businesswoman. she's extremely smart. i know her permanently. i spend a lot of time with her. she's extremely clever. anytime a future first lady is giving a speech about with children and -- >> andy, as you're saying that, the words are up there on the screen. >> so maybe this will help. >> as a former speech writer, you would look at what michelle obama said previously the. >> of course. you would look back at great speeches, right? >> yes. somewhere along the way, someone has to catch this. this isn't on just one speech writer. this had is a reflection of mismanagement of the convention, i would say. this wasn't the only error tonight. this is an error that will drowned out other ones, including speakers going far too late into prime time. and i think this plays into the
10:05 pm
idea that donald trump doesn't know what he's doing on the national stage. >> bakari, we were sitting there and you were like, wait a minute, we kind of noticed, we said, that speech sounds is a little bit familiar, right, as we were watching it. >> as we were watching it and rehashing it, it did. there was a great deal of pride that came along with michelle oh bam ma's speech in 2008. >> you picked up on it first. >> there were people in the twitter sphere that did, as well. this is blah jorism. you can say whatever you want to say, but you're responsible for the words that come out of your mouth. at the end of the day, you are responsible for the words that ca come out of your mouth. but, i mean, i just sit back and i just -- you know, this is a moment in which i said that melania trump gave a speech tonight that she didn't really invoke anything personal, no personal anecdotes with about donald trump. i get that.
10:06 pm
but at the end of the day, she was absolutely stunning. she was beautiful, she delivered a great speech. at the end of the day, it's good. but then i -- after reviewing it and seeing what we saw, i was wondering why there was no red meat in the speech because it was full of blue meat. >> bakari and i were sitting there watching the speech and he said, it's not bowled over by the speech, but she looks -- good tonight. she is fine as hell. >> she can be well spoken. she is impressive. this was an opportunity for donald trump to look good by presenting his wife. and she should have been able to explain what kind of woman she is to the public. and you can't do that when you take michelle obama's words. >> she spoke before the speech tonight about her speech. let's listen in and you and i will discuss this. >> has she gone over the speech with you? did you practice it on the plane? >> i read once over it and that's all because i wrote it
10:07 pm
and -- with a little help as possible, so -- >> okay. so -- >> a lot of work goes into these speeches. >> let's do a couple things. let's go back one hour. one hour ago, we all walked out of that convention center and said they had a good convention tonight. by and large, there must have been some errors they could have gone over. she gave a good speech. a low bar because people didn't think she was going to do well. she did fantastic. here we are now, an hour later. there appears to be blah jorism and this is something that's going to over-shadow all day tomorrow what was a fairley successful night for the trumps. i know you don't agree with me, caylee, but that's the fact of the matter. >> tease a cryptism vision of what happened. what happened is we had 12 hours of of a really good day. and nothing can take away from this woman who stood there and was strong and confident and did something none of us could do in
10:08 pm

10:09 pm
>> you just heard her say she herself plagiarized. >> this isn't character assassination. this is pointly out that if you're someone's spouse, shouldn't you be able to tell a personal anecdote? when i met donald trump, he was whatever. >> and she has. anderson cooper just said on the air one hour ago, many of the things she said to me, she's echoed to me personally in interviews. >> can we do this? let's just go to where we are in the world of reality here, okay? this is going to cloud the night. that's an absolutism. it is a fatal error for the campaign. absolutely not are people going to look at melania trump and think any worse of her? no, absolutely non, no. but is it going to cloud what was a successful night tomorrow snt absolutely. >> and there is still no reaction from the trump campaign tonight. what should the trump campaign do moving forward? >> put her out for some more interviews so she can speak in
